About Girls Lacrosse
posted 04/02/2013

Women's lacrosse, sometimes shortened to wlax or lax, is a sport played with twelve players on each team. Originally played by the indigenous peoples of the Americas, the first tribe to play it was the Hauser tribe, of the Great Plains. The modern women's game was introduced in 1890 at the St Leonards School in Scotland. The rules of women's lacrosse differ significantly from men's field lacrosse.

The object of the game is to use a long handled racket, know as a lacrosse stick or a crosse, to catch, carry, and pass a solid rubber ball in an effort to score by ultimately hurling the ball into an opponent's goal.  The triangular head of the lacrosse stick has net strung into it that allows the player to hold the lacrosse ball.  Defensively the object is to keep the opposing team from scoring and to dispossess them of the ball through the use of stick checking and body positioning.  The governing body for women's lacrosse teams at the high school level in Texas is the TGHSLL (more on that entity below).
At the collegiate level, lacrosse is represented by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.  In the United States the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship is held each spring.

Women’s lacrosse is played with a team of 12 players; one of the players is usually the goalkeeper. The ball used is typically yellow but can be played with a different colored ball. The duration of the high school game is 50 minutes, two halves of 25 minutes each.  In 2002, goggles became mandatory equipment in the United States and in 2006, hard boundaries were adopted.

Please see the "Rules" tab on the left hand menu for additional details.

hero stick shotThe TGHSLL is the governing body for women's lacrosse teams at the high school level in Texas and Northwest Louisiana.  The league is comprised of 42 Varsity programs, and another 6 JV only developing programs.  The league includes both public and private schools and has experienced steady growth over the last decade, adding over 15 Varsity programs since the 2001 season.

The primary mission of the TGHSLL is to grow the sport and maintain the integrity of the league, providing a level playing field on which teams can compete and determine a state champion.  The foundation of the league is its by-laws, which establish rules for team and player eligibility, while striving to provide opportunities for all young women who would like to play lacrosse in Texas and Louisiana.

The League is divided into three districts.  The North District covers the Dallas, Fort Worth, and Shreveport LA areas. The Central District covers the Austin and San Antonio areas. The South District covers Houston and surrounding areas.  Each District is further divided into two divisions based on relative competitiveness, with league champions determined for each division at the annual league championship tournament.
